3. Renal Blood Flow and Glomerular Filtration Flashcards
(37 cards)
Define glomerular filtration
Formation of an ultrafiltrate of plasma in the glomerulus
Define renal failure
An abrupt fall in glomerular filtration
What leads to reduced glomerular filtration?
Abnormalities in renal circulation
What type of process in glomerular filtration?
Passive process
Define passive process
Fluid is ‘driven’ through the semipermeable (fenestrated) walls of the glomerular capillaries into the bowmans capsule space by the hydrostatic pressure of the heart
Describe the filtration barrier
A fenestrated endothelium of capillaries and semipermeable Bowman’s capsule
What is the filtration barrier highly permeable to?
Fluids and small solutes
What are small solutes?
‘Freely filtered’ same concentration in filtrate and plasma
Define primary urine
A clear fluid, completely free from blood and proteins, is produced containing electrolytes and small solutes
What is the driving force of glomerular filtration?
Hydrostatic pressure in glomerular capillaries (due to blood pressure)
What are the opposing pressures of glomerular filtration?
Hydrostatic pressure of tubule Pt (pressure inside the tubules makes it more difficult for substances to pass through) + Oncotic pressure of plasma proteins in glomerular capillaries Pigc
Give the equation for the amount excreted in the urine?
Amount excreted = Amount filtered + amount secreted - amount reabsorbed
How do calculate the net ultrafiltration pressure?
Puf = Pgc - Pt - Pigc
This is approximately 10mmHg
What is the equation for GFR?
GFR = Puf x Kf
What is Kf
The ultrafiltration coefficient
What are the two component of Kf?
Membrane permeability and the surface available for filtration
What causes imbalances to the GFR?
Changes in filtration forces or Kf
What effect do kidney diseases have on the Kf?
Reduces the number of functioning glomeruli = reduces the surface area = reduces the Kf
Why is it important to measure GFR
To check kidney function
How can Kf be increased?
Dilation of glomerular arterioles by drugs/hormones. During infection this occurs so white blood vells can enter
What is the definition of GFR?
The amount of fluid filtered from the glomeruli into the bowmans capsule per unit of time (ml/min)
What is the renal blood flow?
1L/min
What is the renal plasma flow?
0.6L/min
What component of blood is plasma?
60%
