What are the homelessness and housing challenges in Hamilton?

A

There are only 3 family shelters in all of southern ontario and one of them resides in Hamilton.
There is limited to no support for single fathers, because kids are not aloud in mens shelters.
The goal of the good shepherd in hamilton is to find housing for families within 6 weeks.

A

Newcomers to the country:
whom are fleeing violence, feinting with their family, have an unexpected immigration date or for opportunities.
Unforseen circumstances like fires and floods
fleeing any type of abuse
evictions

What theories are used at the good shepherd?

A

Anti-racism and anti-oppression as some of the individuals may have experienced this.
Stregth based theory, individuals are not judged for their current state of homelessness and instead focus on
something that is going well in their lives.
Critical Social Work: evaluate the structural violence at play: landlords ect..
Social systems: Being homeless will impact ALL aspects of the individuals life
Feminist Social work: Supporting female households.

What is meant by social work assessment in the direct practice?

A

assessment analyzes what help is needed based on the clients idea’s thoughts and feelings, once assessment is completed the social worker formulates a plan with the client.

Assessment at the end of a plan will gather evidence to understand presenting problems, to evaluate progress and outcomes and to asses the effectiveness of the interventions or programs.
