The Industrial Revoloution Flashcards
What was it?
The industrial revolution was the development of factories and technology to improve quality of life and productivity. Huge developments in farming and manufacturing changed how/where people lived and how things were made and sold.
When did it take place?
The industrial revolution took place from 1750 to 1900s
Who was involved (individuals, societies, nations)?
British/European eventually whole world industrialised. Isambard Kingdom Brunel engineered the first tunnel under the Thames, Great Western Railway and the first Steam and propeller powered ships. Luddites, chartists, and trade unions are some of the groups that affected the industrial revolution.
How did society change as a result of the Industrial Revolution (at the time)?
Population increased drastically because of better medicine. The introduction of new power sources. More laws about child labour. Many people moved into cities because they lost their work on farms to machines. People were forced to work long hours in cramped, unsafe and unsanitary conditions. Children were employed more because they were small and less expensive to employ.
What impact has the Industrial Revolution had on modern society?
Without the industrial revolution we wouldn’t have many of the luxuries we have today such as electricity, computers steam engines/trains, cars, factories with production lines. We wouldn’t have the 8 hour working day laws so people would still be working ridiculous hours.
