Cells Flashcards
Lysosomes
Small spheres containing enzymes that breakdown proteins lipids and other things. Eg gets rid of waste
Golgi Apparatus
Modifies and packages proteins for excretion from the cell
Passive Transport
Diffusion (osmosis)
- simple or facilitated (protein channels)
Active Transport
Endocytosis(pinocytosis - liquids. And phagocytosis - solids) - vesicle is formed. Fold of cell membrane around the substance which breaks off and passes through the membrane.
Ion pumps
Exocytosis getting rid of wastes
Factors that effect speed of cell transport
Temperature Concentration gradient Type of chemical (polar or non polar) Size of molecule Alcohol - increases permeability Thickness of membrane
Metabolism
All the chemical reactions that occur in the body
Anabolic - build or add
Catabolic - break down
Cell Membrance - Fluid Mosaic Model
Made up of phospholipid bi-layer -
phospholipid hydrophilic phosphate head.
Hydrophobic tail - glycerol and fatty acids
Types of Proteins found on cell membrane
Glycoproteins-recognises other cells to form groups
Peripheral - sits inside or outside of membrane not inside
Receptor - recognises hormones
Integral - passes through whole membrane
Non-integral only passes through half
Cell Respiration
Anaerobic - Glycolysis - cytoplasm
6 carbon chain broken into two halfs or pyruvate molecules. Produces 2 ATP
Aerobic(uses oxygen in mitochondria)
Krebs Cycle - complex series of catabolic reactions that produces an ATP per pyruvate plus CO2
Electron Transfer Chain - 36 ATP and H20
Overall Reaction
Glucose + Oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy
