Cain Cuvee (NV10 Napa, CA)

A

$80

Note: the NV stands for non-vintage, since this wine is a blend of wines from several different years. Cain is well-regarded as a blender - their Cain Five was the first wine in Napa to blend all five traditional Bordeaux grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec) into a wine of similar structure, depth, and complexity.

Venge Vineyards “Scout’s Honor” (‘12 Napa, CA)

A

$100

“Scout’s Honor” in memory of their beloved vinayard dog named Scout…

Blend:

“In this big proprietary blend, winemaker Kirk Venge pits 70% Zinfandel and 14% Petite Sirah against 11% Charbono (a rare find in the Napa Valley) and 5% Syrah. The results are complex in deep cherry and milk chocolate, with plenty of grip and drinkable tannins, the finish soft and rich.

Vineyard Notes:
2011 was another cool growing season. December was very wet, with January very dry and warm. La Niña brought more late-winter rains and spring showers through the end of June. The rainfall total for 2011 ended up at 125% of normal. Two weeks of summer heat at the end of September led to the harvest of the first Bordeaux reds from our Oakville Estate Vineyard on October 3. With an impending rain event, our vineyard crew worked to open up the canopy with leaf removal for air flow and sun exposure in early October. For the last three weeks of October, the skies cleared and the sun came out for a fantastic long stretch of dry weather. The rain and cool weather of early October paused ripening, and the Indian summer got maturation rolling again. It was unseasonably warm on some days, even reaching 90°F in Oakville on October 23. The last Franciscan Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was picked on October 24. Our Oak Knoll Merlot ripens earlier and we began bringing in the perfectly ripened fruit on October 1 while Oakville Merlot came in about two weeks later starting on October 12.
