3.1 Adaptation and Variation Flashcards
To learn vocab words (13 cards)
Extinct
describes a species that has completely disappeared from earth
Adaptation
a structure, behavior, or physiological change that helps an organism survive or reproduce in a set environment
what is adaptation the result of?
gradual and accumulative changes that help an organism survive and reproduce
Mimicry
a structural adaptation in which a harmless species mimics a harmful species.
why do species mimic others?
it increases the changes of them being avoided by predators.
Variation
difference in structure, function or physiology of individuals
what determines if a variation becomes an adaptation or not?
the environment which dictates weather the variation will help the organism survive or not.
What is the role of the environment/environmental changes?
climate change
droughts, floods
human activity
Mutation
a permanent change in genetic material of an organism
What do mutations lead to?
they lead to genetic variation, which may also lead to adaptation.
Mutagen
radiation, environmental agents, all of which aspects that can also cause mutation
When can and can’t mutations be passed down?
in somatic cells they do not get passed down, they disappear once the individual who carries them disappears
they can be passed down when they occur in cells that produce gametes
Selective Advantage
an advantage that improves chances of survival in a changing environment
