3.1 energy demands Flashcards
(10 cards)
How are our demands met?
Our energy demands are met mostly by burning oil, coal, and gas
What energy is used to provide some of the energy we use?
Nuclear power, by fuse and renewable resources
What is used as the fuel in a nuclear power station?
Uranium or plutonium
What is the downside of using uranium or plutonium?
Much more energy is released per kilogram from uranium or plutonium then from fossil fuels
What are biofuels?
Biofuels are renewable sources of energy. Bio fuels such as methane and ethanol can be used to generate electricity.
What does renewable mean?
Energy sources that can be replaced naturally and will not run out in the foreseeable future
What does carbon neutral mean?
A biofuel from a living organism that takes in as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it was released when the fuel is burned
What does nuclear fuel mean?
Substance used in nuclear reactors that releases energy due to nuclear fission
What does nucleus mean?
Tiny positively charged object composed of protons and neutrons at the centre of every atom
What does reactor core mean?
Thick steel vessel used to contain fuel rods, control rods and the moderator in a nuclear fission reactor
