3.1 Introduction to organic chemistry Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a chain isomer?
An isomer where the carbon chain (so only the carbon skeletal is affected)
What is a position isomer?
when the functional group of the compound is moved to a different carbon
e.g 1 bromo, 2 bromo
what is a functional group isomer?
when they are reorganised into a different functional group
alkene into a cycloalkane
what is E/Z isomerism?
Only used for alkenes
When two of the same element are on the same side it is a Z isomer
when they are on opposite sides they are E isomers
what do you do when there are no same elements in the E/Z isomerism?
use the Atomic weight to decide which element takes priority
Define stereoisomerism
Isomers with same structural formula
with bonds having different spacial arrangements
define electrophilic addition
A lone pair acceptor
that converts double bonds into single bonds.
