3.1 The Mole & Molar Mass Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a mole?
It is a unit, like a “ dozen” but much bigger
1 mole=
6.022 x 10 to the 23
What is Avogrado’s number?
- the number of particles in one mole
What is Avogrado’s numbers equation?
N little A= 6.022 x 10 to the 23 particles per mole
For Avogrado’s number the particles can be…
- atoms (for elements)
- molecules (for compounds)
- formula units (for ionic compounds)
How much mass does a mole have?
It depends on the substance and how heavy the particles are
What is molar mass?
-M or MM
- this is the mass of one mole
- the unit is g/mol
How can you determine the mass of the mole?
- use the periodic table
- each element has an atomic mass, it is based on the number of particles in 12 g of carbon-12
How can you determine the mass of the mole for compounds?
- You need to calculate molar mass
- Add the atomic masses for each atom in the molecule
When converting between moles and masses, what is the equation?
n=m divided by M
When converting between moles and masses, what does n represent?
The number of moles (mol)
When converting between moles and masses, what does m represent?
The mass of the substance (g)
When converting between moles and masses, what does M represent?
The molar mass (g/mol)
