Q

In 5–7 sentences, explain the struggle between Pip’s desires and Pip’s conscience. Provide a few examples of this internal conflict.

A

Pip wants to win Estella’s affection; however, Estella keeps giving cruel comments about how he is common. Due to this, Pip constantly wonders what Estalla thinks of him. This causes him to wish that he was something better than a blacksmith’s apprentice. Later in the book Biddy then tells Pip that if Pip has to change himself for Estalla to like him, then it is not worth it. Finally, Pip has two choices he can keep thinking the way he has been thinking, or he can take Biddy’s advice. Therefore, this is an excellent example of Pip’s desire and his conscience.
