3.1.2 Carbohydrates Flashcards
(5 cards)
what are the 3 types of carbohydrates
poly,mono and disaccharides
define these 3 types
polysaccharides- are complex carbohydrate molecules that are composed of a large number of monosaccharides joined togather by glycosidic bonds.
monosachharides-basic simple sugarsthat are the monomers which join togather to form carbohydrates.
disaccharides- carbohydrates molecules composed of two carbohydrate molecule joined togather .
molecular formula of monosachharides
C6 H12 O 6
molecular formula of dissacharides
C 12 H22 O11
what are the properties of sugars
1- SOLUBLE IN WATER
sugars are soluble in water and this is especially important in humans where solublity ensure the sugars absorbed are effectively transported by binding with the plasma in the bloodstream
EASY TO BREAKDOWN-
Quick breakdown of sugars ensure quick energy release which important in animals.
also gives brain a steady supply of oxygen to the brain enabling it to finction properly.
