appropriation
the more or less direct taking over into a work of art of a real object or even an existing work of art.
“Death of the Author”
An idea presented by Roland Barthes arguing that the tradition in literature of incorporating intentions and biographical information of the creator in their work is no longer necessary; the work and the creator are unrelated.
postmodernism
Ideas and work based on the position that reality is not mirrored in human understanding of it, but is rather constructed as the mind tries to understand its own personal reality; a response to scientific or objective methods of explaining reality.
pastiche
a work of art, literature, film, music, or architecture that openly imitates the work of a previous artist, sometimes with the intent of satire; a combination of parts of a work derived from original work of others.
gaze
a concept used for analyzing visual culture that deals with how an audience views the people presented. The male gaze is a variation in which the subject of the gaze is the female body and the person’s view is the male (such as in movies, advertisements, or other imagery.)
Graffiti Art
(Italian for “scribbling”) the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted, or marked in any manner on property. Graffiti is any type of public markings that may appear in the forms of simple written words to elaborate wall paintings.
