3.1.6 Equilibria Flashcards
(8 cards)
what’s a dynamic equilibrium
both forward and backward reactions are occurring simultaneously
what are the 2 features of dynamic equilibrium?
- forward & backward reactions are occurring at equal rates
- the concentrations of reactants and products stay constant
what’s Le Chatelier’s principle?
if an external condition is changed the equilibrium will shift to oppose the change
increasing temperature: effect on equilibria?
-the equilibrium will shift to oppose this and move in the endothermic direction to try and reduce temperature
increasing pressure: effect on equilibria?
-equilibrium will shift to oppose this and will shift towards the side with fewer moles of gas and thereby reduce the pressure
increasing concentration: effect on equilibria?
-equilibrium will shift to oppose this and move in the forward direction to decrease concentration
catalyst: effect on equilibria?
-no effect, but will speed up rate at which equilibrium is achieved
-it doesn’t effect position of equilibrium because it speeds up the rates of the forward and backward reactions by the same amount
equation for equilibrium constant?
(Products chemical formula to power of number in front) / (reactants chemical formula to power of number in front)
