Q

What are the function of phosphate ions?

A
  • Joins nucleotides in phosphodiester bond of DNA
  • Used to make ATP and DNA
  • Phosphorylates other molecules to make them more reactive
  • Hydrophilic part of phospholipid bilayer
  • Affects water potential/osmosis

Q

What are the functions of sodium ions?

A
  • Role in co-transport of glucose and amino acids into cells
  • Because they are actively transported out of cells by sodium potassium pump
  • Creates a sodium concentration gradient
  • Affects water potential/ osmosis
