3.2 Flashcards
Nucleosome
Consists of molecules of 4 different histones. Dna wraps around it caus its - and histones are + charged. 5th histone appears a lot to create durther wrapping an eventually a chromosome
Plasmids
Small loops of DNA that are extra copies of some of the genetic material of the organism
Transcription and dna packaging
Dna wrapped around histones and further wrapped to make more elaborate strucures is innaccessible to transcription enzymes. Therefore wrapping or packaging of DNA regulates transcription process, only parts of dna involved in protein synthesis
Multiple chromosomes
Each carry a different set of instructions for the cell
Homologous
Similar in shape and size, it means the 2 chromosomes carry the same genes
Diploid
A nucleus that has chromosomes organized into pairs of homologous chromosomes
Haploid
Chromosomes do not come in pairs, only have a single chromosome from each pair
Karyogram
A representation of chromosomes found in a cell arranged according to a standard format according to soze and shape.
Used to show a persons karyotype
Karyotype
The specific number and appearance of the chromosomes in his or her cells
Autosomal
When the locus of a trait is on one of the 22 pair of autosomes not sex chromosomes
Autosome
Any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome
Autoradiography
A technique in which radiation from a substance is captured on photographic film or by a camera sensor
