what are the positive impacts of delegation on a business?
•can motivate staff
•makes it easier in the future to identify staff with qualities needed for promotion
•allows the boss more time for planning and thinking instead of doing
what are the advantages of a narrow span of control?
*the manager can communicate easily with the employees under them and control them more easily
*feedback from the workers will be more effective as it encourages more direct and frequent communication between manager and employees
*it requires less management skill as there aren’t as many employees to control
what are disadvantages of a narrow span of control?
•it may involve additional paying costs for managers
what are the advantages of a wide span?
•there are less layers of management to pass a message through so the message reaches more employees faster
•it costs less money to run because a business does not need to employ as many managers
what are the disadvantages of a wide span of control?
managers may find it harder to look after more staff
what are the benefits of an organisation chart?
•they show who is responsible for which functions and tasks
•they show what a person is accountable for
•they show which work is delegated to who
•they show who a worker is managed by and from whom they take orders from
•they show the lines of communication up and down a business
•they show lines of authority
what are features of a tall organisation chart?
•more levels of management
•many lines of communication
•tend to be seen in larger more established organisations
what are the advantages of a tall organisation?
•the lines of communication and the responsibilities of the workers are clear
•the span of control more narrow so there aren’t many people to look after
•there will be many promotion opportunities that would motivate staff
what are the features of a flat organisation?
•fewer levels of management
•fewer lines of communication
•tends to be seen in more modern organisations
what are advantages of flat organisations?
•communication may be quicker from top to bottom as there aren’t as many layers
•less mistakes in communication as the message has not been passed through as many layers
•a wider span of control means managers must delegate work which may make workers feel more motivated
what is delayering?
•when one or more layers of management are removed from the organisation structure/chart
•only happens at manager/supervisor level (never top or bottom)
what are some advantages of delayering?
•it saves money as salaries of workers laid off are no longer being paid
•the responsibilities of workers that have been laid off may be delegated down the hierarchy, motivating and empowering workers
what is full time work?
full time is generally thought of as 35 hours per week or more
what is part time work?
It is generally seen as 35hours per week or less
what are advantages of part time working for the business?
•experienced workers such ad those retiring can still stay and contribute to the business
•the business may have more choice of workers by offering part time works as not everyone wants full time
•can reduce overtime costs
•they can respond to changes in demand by employing staff to work only in peak hours
what are advantages of part time working for the worker?
•suits people who need to look after family/pick up children from school
•suits students who want to earn while they study
•suits semi-retired workers who do not want to work a full week
what are disadvantages of part time working for the worker?
•part time work may mean a lower income for a worker who’d prefer full time
•the hours may be inconvenient for the worker such as 3hours in the morning and 2 later in the afternoon
