3.2.2 All Cells Arise from other cells Flashcards
(15 cards)
How do cell divide in eukaryotic organims?
Mitosis
What are the two parts to the cell cycle in eukaryotic organisms?
- Interphase
- Mitosis
What occurs during interphase?
- DNA unravels and is replicated to double its genetic content
- Its organelles also begin to replicate and ATP levels increase
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is the party of the cell cycle where a eukaryotic cell divides to produce two identical daugter cells
What are the 5 stages of mitosis?
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
- Cytokensis
What occurs during Prophase?
- Chromosomes condense by getting shorter and fatter
- Centrioles move to the poles of the cells
- The nuclear envelope begins to break down
What occurs during Metaphase?
- The chromosomes line up at the equator
- The centriole spindle fibres attach to the centromere
What occurs during Anaphase?
- The centromeres divide seperating each pair of sister chromatids
- The spindles contract pulling chromatids to oppoiste poles
- This makes the centromere look v-shaped
What occurs during Telophase?
- The chromatids reach the poles and begin to unfold and are now called chromosomes again
- A nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosomes
What occurs during Cytokensis?
Divison of the cytoplasm and form the two identical daughter cells
What is cancer?
Cancer is the formation of a tumor that invades the surrounding tissue. Tumors form through the uncontrolled division of cells
What are the two types of cancer?
Maliganant
Benign
What are maliganat tumors?
Faster growing
Tumor metastisises
What are benign tumors?
Slower growing
