Government by the people
Democracy
Certain legal procedures by which the government must abide in order to protect the rights of the accused
Due Process
The first ten amendments of the Constitution, which protect citizens’ democratic rights by placing restrictions on the state and national governments
Bill of Rights
The system used to elect the U.S. president; each state has a number of electors equal to the state’s representation; at least 270 electoral votes are needed to win the presidency
Electoral College
A principle of government that as- serts that a numerical majority of the electorate can make decisions binding upon the entire electorate
Majority Rule
society in which differing opinions and parties exist freely
Pluralistic Rule
the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities
