What is a POM-VPS?

A

A

A

A

What is the veterinary cascade?

A

When a product is not available for animals, a veterinary surgeon can prescribe a medicine that is not licensed for use in animals under the veterinary cascade. It is unlawful to supply any human medicine for animal use unless it is prescribed through the cascade.

What additional requirements are there on POM-V and POM-VPS prescriptions?

A

The name, address, telephone number, qualifications and signature of the prescriber must be present.
Name and address of owner
Identification and species of animal, and address if different from owner
Must be dated, same time restrictions as human prescriptions
Name, quantity,dose and administration instructions of required medicine - as directed not acceptable
Any necessary warnings and if relevant the withdrawal period - the time that must elapse between administration of medicine and when it can be used for food.
If prescribed under the cascade, the prescription must say prescribed under the veterinary cascade.
If a schedule 2 or 3 drug has been prescribed, there must be a declaration that the item has been prescribed for an animal or herd under the care of the veterinarian, normal cd prescription req apply too
If repeatable, it must state number of times it can be repeated

What differences are there for a CD drug supplied for animal usage?

A

No standardised form
Must state ‘prescribed for treatment of an animal or herd under my care’ by the vet
Vet prescriptions are kept for 5 years
They do not have to be submitted to NHS
Should be a max of 28 days unless long term ongoing treatment
Same requirements for wording ie figures and words

What requirements are there for labelling medicine supplied under the cascade?

A

That’ll the following should appear on the label:
Name and address of prescribing veterinary surgeon
The name and address of the animal owner
Name and address of the pharmacy
Identification and species of the animal
Date of supply
Expiry date of the product if obscured by label
The name or description of the product and its active ingredients and contents quantity
Dosage and administration instructions
If appropriate storage instructions
Any necessary warnings for the user
Any withdrawn period

The words for animal treatment only
The words keep out of reach of children

Is a label required for medicines for animals that are not prescribed under the cascade, ie medicines designed for animals?

A

the VMR does not state that a label is required, but it is good practice to dispense one.

What records should be kept for vet prescriptions?

A
Record in POM books showing
Name of medicine
Date of supply
Batch number
Quantity
And and address of the recipient 
If there is a prescription, the name and address of th prescribed should be recorded.
A copy of prescription should be kept for 5 years
