3.2.8 specialist techniques and processes Flashcards
(8 cards)
commercial dying
continuous- machine feed tough tanks of dye so all the same colour
batch- respond to demand
stock- before fabrics are spun/ woven
so more control over colour
batique
wax as a pattern resists dying
material is washed at high temp and leaves a pattern
tie dye
twisting, folding, crumpling in place with elastic bands. Folds resist dye and leave a pattern when they’re left to dye
screen printing
wood frame with fibre mesh, ink is spread with a squeege.
+effective, low cost
- screens and stencils take time
block printing
ink dipped in blocks with raised designs
+complete control over hand printing
+easily repeated and colours changed
digital printing
uses CAD/CAM as it rolls of fabric are fed though a printer
+more complex images
+can save designs electronically
+adapt to JIT method by reacting to trends
+low labour costs
-set up costs high
how is weaving suitable for commercial
-weaving looms linked to CAD to allow for changes in pattern
-undergo a ‘test weave’
-weaving looms produce large quantities at low cost
-can be constructed in different ways to give a variety of characteristics
Laser cutting
A data file must be created
Different colours in CAD assigned to different tasks eg. Red for cutting
Speed of laser and PPI determine tolerances
Extractor on and lid shut when in use
