simple binary form
a piece of music with two sections that are equal in length and feature different musical material.
balanced binary form
a piece of music in two sections in which material from the first section recurs in the second section as a return to tonic.
rounded binary form
a piece of music in two sections in which the first section is repeated in tonic at the end of the second section
sonata form
an expansion of rounded binary form which contains an exposition, development and recapitulation based on a small number of themes. Koch describes this in his third volume of Introductory Essay on Composition.
exposition
the first section of sonata form stating the first theme(s) in tonic
development
second section of sonata form in which the themes of the first section (exposition) are presented in new combinations and modulations
recapitulation
third section of sonata form in which the material ofthe first section (exposition) is restated in original order in the tonic key.
variation form
a form that presents and uninterrupted series of variations on a theme. Often used in slow movements of sonatas, chamber music or symphonies.
minuet and trio form
combines two binary form movements repeating the first after playing the second resulting in an ABA form. Often used in quartets and symphonies
rondo form
a theme presented alternating with episodes of other themes (often in other keys) resulting in ABACADA or similar form. Often used in last movements of sonatas or symphonies.
symphonie concertante
a concerto-like work with two or more solo instruments in addition to the orchestra in which the main material is given to the soloists
galant style
18th century music that featured song-like melodies, short phrases, frequent cadences, and light accompaniment.
periodicity
frequent resting points that break the melodic flow into segments that relate to each other a part of a larger whole.
