Rickettsia

A
  • Rickettsia rickettsii (Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever)
    • Dermacentor ticks
  • Rickettsia prowazekii (Epidemic typhus)
    • Flying squirrels –> lice –> humans
    • Centrifugal rash, vascular necrosis
  • Rickettsia typhi (Endemic typhus)
    • Rodents –> fleas –> humans
  • Coxiella burnetii (Q Fever)
    • Inhalation of spores –> atypical pneumonia
    • No rash, no arthropod transmission

Tx: doxy or chloramphenicol

Welix-Felix reaction uses Proteus vulgaris to diagnose Rickettsia (except Coxiella burnetii)
