3.3 Flashcards
(12 cards)
what is a producer in a food web
the producers are usually plants, they do not feed on any other species
what is a primary consumer
primary consumers eat only from the producer level
what is a secondary consumer
secondary consumers are species that eat from the primary level
what is a tertiary consumer
tertiary consumers eat from the secondary level
what is a quaternary consumer
a quaternary consumer eats species at the tertiary level
at what level do you find herbivores?
primary
at what levels do you find omnivores
primary + any one above primary
at what levels do you find carnivores
any level greater than primary
what is the difference between a food web and trophic cascade diagram
a food web shows which species eat which other species, while a trophic cascade shows relationships, positive or negative, direct or indirect, between different species
how do you make predictions using a trophic cascade model?
a trophic cascade model can be used to see the indirect and direct relationships between species in a community, so one can predict that, for example, if species A has a negative effect on species B, that A’s removal from the ecosystem would cause B’s population to rise
what is a keystone species
a keystone species is one that regulates an ecosystem, and one which its removal can cause the ecosystem to collapse
