Derek is in a long-term relationship with Catherine. Derek used to find the relationship very rewarding, as Catherine gave him a lot of affection and attention. However, more recently Derek feels he puts more into the relationship than he is getting out of it and he also feels he has given up a lot, like not seeing his friends as much as he used to.
Explain how Derek views his relationship with Catherine in terms of the social exchange theory (3 marks)
Social exchange theory is an economic explanation of relationship maintenance that is based on a maximisation of profits and minimisation of costs.
Derek initially maintained his relationship with Catherine as the profits outweighed the costs, with Catherine giving him a lot of affection and attention.
The maintenance of the relationship is now threatened, however, as Derek perceives that he puts more into
the relationship than he gets out of it.
