19
Q

What sort of responsibilities might we have with regard to relationships?

A

Laws (about marriage or divorce); looking after other people around the world, or your friends and family; following specific religious teachings.

20
Q

What sort of commitments could you make with regard to relationships?

A

Wedding vows; commitment to God, eg church membership/attendance; chastity.

21
Q

What has happened to attitudes towards towards sex over the last 100 years?

A

Dramatic change, especially same sex relationships, much more permissive. Women, especially, have gained sexual “freedom”, though many feel pressure to “keep their man” before they are ready.

22
Q

What is the Christian view of sex?

A

A gift from God - Genesis “be fruitful” means that some Christians believe that they must have sex and produce children.

23
Q

What is the Christian view of contraception?

A

Roman Catholic view is that it is against the injunction to “multiply”. The Catholic authority has recently allowed contraception to avoid sexually transmitted disease, but not to prevent children. The Anglican (C of E) view is that contraception is OK, as expressing your love to your partner through sex is as important.

24
Q

What is the Christian view of the place of sex in a relationship?

A

It should be saved for a committed relationship, some suggest that it should be saved until marriage.

25
Q

What is the “silver ring thing”?

A

A group encouraging chastity, and suggesting that teenagers should wait until they are married before having sex.

26
Q

What is the Hindu view of sex?

A

It is part of the married duty (arranged marriage may mean that partners don’t ‘fancy’ each other). Sexual pleasure (kama) is one of the four aims in life for a Hindu. Most Hindus still believe that sex should be saved for marriage and young Hindus are encouraged to concentrate on their education, and not be distracted by the opposite sex.

27
Q

What is the traditional view of marriage?

A

A union of a man and a woman - marriage service still talks about children, though some couples are obviously too old etc and they are not denied marriage.

It is considered the best place to bring up children. The Catholics regard marriage as a sacrament. Marriage involves making commitments before God, to look after one another, whatever happens. The C of E traditional vow is “To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part”.

28
Q

What is a civil ceremony (for marriage)?

A

A non-religious ceremony, held in eg a hotel, or a registry office.

29
Q

Why would a civil ceremony be chosen by a same sex couple?

A

Same sex marriage not possible in religious ceremony. (Law recently changes, but the spec has not been updated).

30
Q

What symbolic token forms part of the Christian marriage ceremony?

A

Rings are exchanged as a symbol of unity, a reminder of the promises they have made. The ring is also a symbol of eternity, as it has no end, and also the endless love of God.

31
Q

What is the Hindu view of marriage?

A

Often arranged by couples parents. It is thought that parents are better able to choose a partner as they are more experienced. Love is not seen as important before marriage, it happens and grows within the marriage. Marriage does not just join two people, but two families.

32
Q

What symbolic tokens form part of the Hindu marriage ceremony?

A

The bride’s sari is tied to the husband’s scarf. They both walk around the sacred fire and ask for blessings such as children, health or happiness.

33
Q

What is the Christian attitude to divorce?

A

Some say that it is not allowed at all, others accept it. It is breaking the promise to stay together until death, but people do break promises, even those made before God.

Anglicans argue it is unloving to force people to stay together. However, it is the decision of the individual minister whether to offer a remarriage in church.

Catholics often do not allow divorce at all, this makes remarriage impossible. They see the vows more important than other teachings to “love thy neighbour”.

Mostly, a church will encourage partners to reconcile and try again before going for a divorce.

Some churches seem to allow divorce but not remarriage.

34
Q

What is the Hindu view of divorce?

A

Traditionally it is not accepted, family and marriage is very important. However, in practice it is accepted that some marriages do not work out.

35
Q

What is adultery?

A

The breaking of wedding promises or going against the commitment to a relationship by being with another person. It could be sex, or just dating. It is a breach of trust.

36
Q

What is the Christian view of adultery?

A

It is explicitly forbidden by the ten commandments; it is a breach of the marriage vows which were made before God and are therefore especially binding; it is unloving towards the partner, therefore against the important commandment to love.

37
Q

What is the Hindu view of adultery?

A

There is duty and responsibility that comes with marriage, so adultery is strongly disapproved of.

38
Q

What are the effects of adultery?

A

Very bad for the relationship, also harms other people, eg the children. If it leads to divorce then there are further harmful effects - financial, not seeing one parent as much, self-esteem (children often blame themselves).

39
Q

Explain what religious believers mean by “love”. [2]

A

One of the most powerful human emotions that binds people together; deep affection for someone expressed through words or actions; emotion in a relationship where there is a sense of commitment.

40
Q

Explain how religious belief might influence a couple who want to use contraception. [4]

A

Answer much show the impact of faith! Consider teachings within a sacred text, eg “be fruitful and multiply”; consider teachings of Catholics/Anglicans; consider impact and importance of children within and without marriage; health issues.

41
Q

“Adultery is always wrong”. Give two reasons why a religious believer might agree or disagree with this statement. [4]

A

Ten commandments forbid adultery; Adultery breaks solemn promises made during the marriage ceremony; Marriage is meant to be sexually exclusive to the two people in the marriage; for some Christians marriage is a sacrament, something in which God is involved; Fidelity is expected within a marriage which is a religious duty; sex is seen as a special relationship with just one person; children born through adultery may not have a secure basis of family life which many religious believers consider the best; many religious believers regard adultery as harmful socially, personally, spiritually.

On the other hand, pressure to not divorce can be a factor.

42
Q

What are the Christian teachings about sex before marriage?

A

Sex is a gift from God
Sexual relationships should ideally take place within marriage
Chastity is an important virtue
Sexual relationships are special, only between two people at a specific point in life.
Casual sex devalues sex and people.

Pressure not to divorce can mean people feel pressure for a “trial run”.

Roman Catholic - no contraception means children outside marriage are more likely

43
Q

What is the Hindu view of sex before marriage?

A

People should exercise chastity until the end of their studies, and also during retirement and renunciation.

Sex should only happen in marriage.

Kama (sexual pleasure) is one of the 4 aims of life in Hinduism, and should be kept in balance with the other 3.

Sexual pleasure can be a form of religious experience.

44
Q

Give reasons why marriage should be for life.

A

Marriage is the basis of family life.

Some religious traditions do not accept divorce.

Marriage may involve vows such as “until death do us part”.

Separation is an alternative to divorce.

Marriage happens before God.

45
Q

Give reasons why marriage should not be for life.

A

Marriages do not always work out.

Divorce is accepted for some religious believers.

Marriages break down for a number of reasons.

It might be more loving to allow people to separate.

A divorce may be a better environment than an unhappy household… (think of me - swapped an alcoholic father for Opa).
