3.3.2 Alkanes Flashcards
(11 cards)
Why does boiling point in alkanes increase?
As carbon chain length increases, and alkanes get larger there are more electrons and increase of van der waals forces.
What is fractional distillation?
The process of separating crude oil into groups of hydrocarbons with similar numbers of carbon atoms.
What is cracking?
The process of converting alkanes into alkenes and shorter alkanes.
What temperature and pressure is cracking done at?
1,000 C and 70atm
Why are catalysts used in cracking?
Allows you to lower the temperatures and pressures needed for the reaction. It reduces the cost and makes the reaction faster.
What is the name of the catalyst is used for catalytic cracking?
Zeolite catalyst
What colour flame does complete combustion give you?
Blue flame
What colour flame does incomplete combustion give you?
Orange smoky flame
What does complete combustion produce?
Carbon dioxide and water
What does incomplete combustion produce?
Gives some carbon dioxide, some water but also pure carbon, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide
Why are flames of incomplete combustion orange?
Carbon particles glowing red
