What is a chemical reaction?
The formation and breaking of chemical bonds
What is an atom?
The smallest unit of an element that retains the unique properties of that element
What are inorganic compounds and what are examples?
Compounds without a hydrocarbon. Water, salts, acids and bases.
What are organic compounds?
Molecules that contain a hydrocarbon. Carbohydrates, lipids, steroids, eicosanoids, and proteins
What are acids?
Ionically bonded substances that freely release hydrogen ions when added to water
What are bases?
Alkaline compounds that are ionically bonded but release hydroxyl ions when added to water
What are five functions of a protein?
Cell structure, structural body tissues, controlling chemical reactions, regulation of growth, defending the body from invaders

Speed up chemical reactions without being destroyed or altered
