3.4 catalysts and enzymes Flashcards
(9 cards)
What do catalysts increase the rate of?
Chemical reactions without changing themselves chemically
What are enzymes?
They are biological catalysts and catalyse specific reactions in living organisms due to the shape of their active site
What is the theory of enzyme action?
The lock and key theory
Enzymes are proteins so what they contain?
They contain amino acid chains that are folded to form the active shite, which matches the shape of a specific substrate molecule
What is the substrate?
The substrate binds to the active site and the reaction is catalysed by the enzyme
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is the sum of all the reactions in the cell or the body
What does catalysed mean?
Causes something to accelerate (reaction)
What is the active site?
The site on an enzyme of the reactions bind
What are catalysts?
A substance that speeds up the rate of another reaction but is not used up or changed itself
