Q

Define bandwidth.

A

Measured usually in kilobits, megabits or gigabits per second, it states the rate at which data travels along a communications line. The higher the bandwidth the quicker the data will travel along the line.

16
Q

What does a high bandwidth do?

A
  • Web pages are loaded more quickly, giving the user a better experience
  • Large multimedia files are downloaded faster
  • Connection to the internet is quicker
  • Network traffic is not congested
  • Response time on a network is better
17
Q

Describe PSTN.

A

Public Switched Telephone Network - uses the traditional telephone system to allow access to WANs and the internet. It has a low bandwidth of 28-56 Kbps. It uses dialup connection.

18
Q

Describe ADSL.

A

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - provides high bandwidth known as broadband.
• Transmits digital information at high bandwidth down a telephone cable
• Permanently switched on, meaning there is no need to dialup
• Telephone or fax messages can be received or made while the user is online
• Provides high speed internet access
• Upload speed is generally much slower than download speed, because users tend to download much more than they upload

19
Q

Describe fibre optic cables.

A

Fibres of glass or perspex used to carry signals of voice data or computer data, through pulses of light.
• Very high bandwidth (speed of light)
• Lighter and thinner than copper cabling
• Immune to interference by radio signals, etc, so is more secure
• Expensive
• Specialised skills required to join cables together
• Used to connect telephone substations

20
Q

Describe cable connections.

A

Customers must be in an area where cable network is available. Users who subscribe to a cable TV company like Virgin Media can connect to the internet using their cable connection, as well as digital TV and phone services.

21
Q

Describe satellite connections.

A
  • A computer connects to the internet and receives and sends information via a satellite dish
  • Useful in rural areas where there is no cable TV available
  • Exensive
  • Users must purchase a satellite dish
22
Q

List 5 items needed to access the internet.

A
  • ISP
  • ISP software
  • Browser software
  • Telecommunications line (eg dialup, ISDN, ADSL)
  • Modem
