3.5 Symbiosis Flashcards
(8 cards)
Define ‘Symbiosis’
A co-evolved intimate relationship between two members of different species
State the two types of symbiotic relationships
- Parasitism
- Mutualism
Define ‘parasitism’
A parasite benefits in terms of energy or nutrients and its host is harmed by the loss of these resources
e.g. mosquitto takes blood of animal
Parasites often have a limited metabolism. What does this mean?
They cannot survive out of contact with host
State the three methods of parasite transmission
transmission = how they spread
- Direct contact
- Resistant stages
- Vectors
Define ‘intermediate host’
Some parasitic life cycles involve another host that allows them to develop and complete their life cycle
Define ‘mutualism’
where two species interact very closely and both organisms benefit from the interaction
Define ‘vector’ in the context of parasitism
an organism that carries a parasite from one host to another
