Why is age 3-7 “ideal” for a brain injury?
Because development has taken place but the brain’s plasticity remains high.
Why might an infant with a stroke look normal until 12 months of age?
The extrapyramidal system is still in place (provides bilateral innervation). Once the pyramidal system takes over, you will notice deficits.
Where will you see deficits from a lesion in a full-term infant? Why?
Arms because they are more vulnerable in watershed areas which are more lateral on the brain surface (think of the Homunculus)
Where will you see damage in a pre-term infant?
What is something specifically you may see?
Legs. They have more of a diffuse vascular supply.
Spastic diplegia: both legs stiff
What is central hypotonia?
An UMN lesion but instead of stiffness, you have a floppy kid but reflexes are brisk.
What does it indicate if a baby puts its thumb inside of its palm?
Something pathological is going on.
