Deck 1 Flashcards
What is the cytotoxin causing necrotising fasciitis? What organism?
Panton Valentine Leukocidin (PVL)
Produced by virulent Staphlococcus Aureus (MRSA)
What does the virulence factor Adhesin do
Enables binding of the organism to host tissue
What does the virulence factor Invasin do
Enables the organism to invade host tissue
What does the virulence factor Impedin do
enables the organism to avoid host defense mechanism
What does the virulence factor Aggressin do
Causes damage to host directly
What does the virulence factor Modulin do
Induces damage to host indirectly
What is Erythropoietic protoporphyria
Disease presented in early childhood with discomfort, itch or tingling in sun exposed skin but other there are no clinical signs. It is caused by a build-up of protoporphyrin IX due to lack of the enzyme ferrochelatase.
What is porphyria cutanea tarda
Disease presented usually in iddle age with blistering, scarring and milia formation of dorsal hands/forearm and often hypertrichosis (excess hair). It is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme Uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase and can be associated with liver disease. Ex Alcoholics
