Density Flashcards

1
Q

what is the equation for density?

A

density (g/cm3 or kg/m3) = mass (g or kg) ÷ volume (cm3 or m3)

desnity = mass ÷ volume

6
Q

how do you find the density in a regular solid

A

find the mass on a balance

measure the three sides; multiply them together to find the volume

density = m ÷ v

Q

how do you find the desnity of liquids?

A

find the mass of an empty measuring cylinder

put in the liquid

measure the volume

find the mass of the cylinder and the liquid

subtract the mass of the cylinder

density = m ÷ v

Q

how do you find the density of gases?

A

fill a round bottomed flask with the gas

stopper the flask with a bung which has glass and rubber tuning and clip attached

using a top pan balace find the mass of the flask, stopper and gas

attach the flask to a vaccum pump

switch off the pump to remove the flask from the pump

using a top pan balance find the mass of the flask, stopper, and any remaining gas in the flask

the mass of the removed gas is the differnence between the two mass readings

fill a trough full of water

holding the flask upside down, place the tube from the bung in the water and unclip the tube

water will rush into the tube to take the place of the removed gas

once no more water is entering the flask, turn it the right way up again and carefully pour the water into a measuring cylinder

the volume of the water is the volume of the gas removed from the flask
