Large swamp (450 km2) in the Coastal Plain Region of SE Virginia y NE North Carolina - Lake Drummond, a very circular natural lake, is located in the heart of the swamp - Dismal Swamp Canal (built 1805) runs along the eastern edge - Designated a Nat. Wildlife Refuge in 1973
