Medicare Part A

A

Most people 65+ who are citizens or permanent residents are eligible for free part A (Hospital); You’re eligible at 65 if: you are eligible for SS benefits; spouse receives or can receive ss or railroad benies; you or spouse (living or deceased) worked long enough in a government job where medicare taxes were paid; you are dependent parent of a fully insure deceased child. If you don’t meet requirements you may be able to benies by paying a monthly premium.

A

Parts A and B directly from govt. are ‘orginal’ medicare. If you receive from a Medicare Advantage organization or other company approved by Medicare, you have an Advantage plan. If you have A and B, you can join an Advantage plan– provied by private companies approved by Medicare– CAN’T have Medigap with these.

A

SSI (Supplemental Security Income)

A

offers $ assistance to low-income people who are at least 65, blind, and/or disabled. SSI pays cash benefits to supplement the cost of food, clothing, and shelter. managed by SSA but funded by general tax revenues–NOT social security taxes. Can qualify for SSI even if work hx. not sufficient for SSDI

How to meet earnings requirement for SSDI?

A

2 earning tests: a ‘recent work’ test based on age at time you became disabled and a ‘duration of work’ test to show person worked long enough. Certain blind workers only have to meet duration test.

A

when you worked; then you you need…

  • in or before quarter you turned 24, then need 1.5 yrs of work during 3 years ending with quarter your disability began.
  • quarter after you turn 24 but before quarter you turn 31 then must work half the time for the period beginning with quarter after you turned 21 and ending with quarter you became disabled.
  • in quarter you turn age 31 or later, then must have worked five year out of the 10 yr. period ending with quarter your disability began.
