Apley Scratch Test:
- Hugging themselves
- Reaching up

* If unable to perform AST, suspect rotator cuff involvement (subscapularis)
Neer’s Test
Impingement
Positive = pain
Hawkin’s- Kennedy
Impingement
Positive= pain
Lift Off
Rotator cuff injury, likely subscapularis
Positive = pain/inability
Drop Arm Test
Rotator cuff tear
Positive= inability to hold arm/control adduction below 90º
Apprehension Test
Shoulder dislocation/subluxation or instability
Positive = visible apprehension from patient’s reaction
Yergeson’s Test:
Bicep tendinopathy or subluxation of biceps tendon
Positive = pain
Speed’s Test
Bicep tendinopathy
Positive = pain
Empty Can Test
Rotator cuff/supraspinatus
Positive = pain
Valgus Stress Test
MCL of knee or ulnar collateral ligament of elbow
Press medially
Varus Stress Test
LCL of knee or RCL of elbow
Press laterally
Cozen’s Test
Resisted wrist extension
Positive = pain
3rd Finger Test
Stresses extensor digitorum and extensor carpi radialis brevis
Positive = pain
de Quervain’s Tensosynovitis
Swelling or stenosis of the sheath that surrounds the abductor pollicus longus and extensor pollicus brevis.
Symptoms include pain associated with pinching, gripping, wrist or thumb movements
Finkelstein’s Test
Fingers flexed around thumb and examiner twists wrist into ulnar deviation
Positive= pain reproduced over the radial wrist
