DNA/RNA Flashcards
Chromosomes
A threadlike structure within a cell’s nucleus that contains DNA that is passed from one generation to the next.
Double helix
The twisted ladder struction of DNA
Nitrogen bases
Molecules that contain nitrogen and other substances that make up the rungs of DNA
Adenine
One of the four kinds of nitrogen bases (make up the rungs)
Thymine
The second of the four kinds of nitrogen bases(make up the rungs)
Guanine
The third of the four kinds of nitrogen bases (make up the rungs)
Cytosine
The last of the four kinds of nitrogen bases (make up the rungs)
Gene
Section of the DNA molecule that contains the information to code one specific protein.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring.
DNA replication
The process in which the identical copy of DNA is formed for a new cell
RNA
The messenger that carries the genetic code from DNA from inside the nucleus to the cytoplasm
Uracil
A nitrogen base found in RNA instead of thymine; abbreviated U.
