Nervous Tissue Flashcards
What are the two components of nervous tissue?
Neurons the nerve cells and glial cells the support cells
What are the neuroglial cells of the CNS?
- Astrocytes
- Oligodendrocytes
- Microglia
- Ependymal cells
What are the glial cells of the CNS?
- Satellite cells
2. Schwann cells
What is the function of astrocytes?
Act as a blood brain barrier and provide nutrients to neurons and take up excess neurotransmitters
What is the function of microglia?
Phagocytose microbes
What are epndymal?
Epithelial cells which line ventricles of the brain and central canal of the spinal chord ans form the cerebrospinal fluid and assist its ciruclation - they contain microglia
What is the two major difference between oligodendrocytes and schwann cells?
Scwann cells PNS while oligo CNS and schwann cells only associated with one axonal segments and oligos not
What are satelite cells?
Flattened cell arranged around the cell bodies of neurons to regulate their enviroment and repear them
What are common tumoirs of the brain called?
Gliomas
Give an examples of a demyelinating disease?
MS is an autoimmune disease and Gullain Barre Syndrome is an immune response where macrophages strip myelin from axons in PNS
