Q

How can social learning theory be applied?

A
  • it argues people learn by imitating role models especially those of the same gender
  • celebrities are role models and are seen to have a higher status so their behaviour is likely to be imitated
  • size zero models such as Eliana Ramos who dies as a result of her eating disorder are observed on TV and in magazines by young girls who then imitate them by restricting daily calorie intake to loose weight

Q

How can Bandura be applied?

A
  • Bandura argues that behaviour is more likely to be imitated if it is rewarded and carried out by someone similar to the P’s/observer
  • In this case the anorexic models are of a similar age to the girls who are imitating them and they are being rewarded for being size zero by getting modelling contracts by getting attention from the media and being paid
  • Therefore vicarious reinforcement

Q

How does punishment apply?

A

If these roll models are banned for being size zero it could stop others imitating them.

  • As a teenage girl watches the model losing work, media attention and money they may be less inclined to imitate them because that behaviour doesn’t lead to anything good
  • Also by using bigger , healthier models it could lead to teenage girls realising being incredibly thin is not a good thing and will reduce anorexia cases.
