What is the purpose of the school fire safety directive?
To provide assistance to public, parochial, private and outside school facilities such as trailers or vans in the implementation of their fire safety and fire prevention programs.
Who develop and maintain a list of all school facilities within their local district?
Station Captain.
Will contact these schools and maintain communications with principals.
Will also arrange for all officers to meet this representative to encourage prompt reporting and investigation of all fires. And to offer assistance in fire prevention and safety programs.
What services can the PFD offer to schools?
a. Advise in planning & executing fire drills
b. help with a Shelter-in-place strategy
c. Advise in the correction of existing hazards
d. STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF UNLOCKED EXIT DOORS DURING OCCUPANCY
e. procedures to follow in apprehending fire setters
f. Availability of educational programs through FPD
g. Organization of junior fire patrol through FPD
How many fire drills should be conducted at each school during the school year?
- One in fall and one in spring.
Complete School Fire Drill Critique Form for each.
When will the school representative notify the local fire company about a school fire drill?
One week prior. The CO will arrange to have the company proceed to the school and observe the drill.
What will the CO tell FCC when going out to conduct a fire drill?
They will go fire duty only for the observance of a fire drill. If the company must go out of service they will notify the BC the day prior. The company is allowed to go out of service 5 min prior to the drill until completion.
Who will the BC coordinate all fire drills through?
The DC. To ensure that no two adjacent companies are placed out of service simultaneously.
What will the CO do upon arrival at a school fire drill?
Contact the principal and physically check the school’s Evacuation and Shelter in place plans.
How will the PFD observe the fire drills?
Members will be placed strategically throughout the building to observe. CO will sign the school log attesting to the fact that the PFD observed the drill and leave a signed copy of the Fire Drill Critique Form.
What will the officer do after the fire drill?
Hold a critique with the members of the fire company and principal to discuss the positives and negatives.
What guideline will be used in observing fire drills?
The PFD fire code and Philadelphia School District Policies and Procedures Number 110. If any problems related to the fire drill arises, a duplicate memo will be forwarded through channels will all pertinent info.
What will be done with the copies of the School Fire Drill Critique Form?
The first copy will go to the school.
The second copy will be kept at the company for record keeping.
The third copy will be forwarded to the Fire Prevention Division Youth Team Administrator and will be used to update our school system database.
How often are fire drills required in all educational facilities?
Monthly, but may be modified due to inclement weather.
When does the first fire drill of the year have to be done by?
Within the first ten days of the beginning of classes.
How often are Shelter in place drills required in educational facilities?
Twice per year and may be conducted in lieu of an evacuation drill.
