What is the history of the port security units?

A

We are deployable units organize to provide force protection operations. We can deploy within 96 hours and establishing operations within 24 hours. OCONUS, we provide port security in support of requesting regional combatant commanders, providing waterside protection to key asset (for example pier areas, high-value assets, and at habor entrances–termination and origination points of the sea line of communications SLOCs. In CONUS we can operate in US territorial waters under the direction of a Coast Guard or maritime defense zone MDZ command or in foreign waters.

A

Until 1999 much of the wartime organization for port security unit was only theoretical.

Notional units were located in:
Buffalo NY PSU 301
Cleveland OH PSU 302
Milwaukee WI PSU 303.

What are the two Port security insignias?

A

The pewter color insignia is for the enlisted members assigned to the PSU. The gold color insignia is for the officers assigned to the PSU. The pin is earned only by a small number of Coast Guard members, approximately 1%, and is primarily a Coast Guard reserve decoration.

A

The badge itself consist of two seahorses, riding on waves, facing back to back with the Coast Guard shield between them.
seahorses = mobility
shield = Coast Guard authority
trident = maritime defense and victory

Who designed the port security insignia?

A

1991
Coast Guard Reservist, Terry D. Jelcick, SK1 retired, while sitting on his bunk at Batar Camp, Damman, Saudi Arabia in the evenings after work. Terry is now retired and is a former member of port security unit 312 based in San Francisco California.
