Empty appearing nuclei with orphan annie eyes, psammoma bodies, nuclear grooves
Lymphatic invasion common
Inc risk with RET and BRAF mutation, childhood irradiation

A

Invades the capsule (unlike follicular adenoma)
Uniform follicles

A

Cancer if the parafollicular C cells - produces calcitonin
Sheets of cells in amyloid stroma
Hematogenous spread
Commmon in MEN2A and MEN2B (RET mutations)

Resection risks

A
  • Hoarseness: due to nicking the recurrent laryngeal nerve
  • Hypoccalcemia: due to removal of the PT glands
  • Resection of the recurrent laryngeal nerve when removing the inferior thyroid artery
  • resenction of the superior laryngeal nerve when removing the superior thyroid artery
