what is the point?
presented as distant and disconnected, through use of layered narrative form and shifting structure
what is the evidence?
the poem is framed as a second hand account “I met a traveller from an antique land”
what is the analysis?
instead of speaking directly, Shelley places his story inside a story, distancing him from the reader. The narrative layering (speaker-traveller-king) creates structure that symbolises how far removed the ruler’s power is from real people. Even the poem is just a memory passed down through voices-not active or relevant.
how does the analysis link back to the point?
Shows that Shelley doesn’t see power as decaying, but already cut off from human connection. Power in the poem is cold, unreachable, and meaningless.
what is the zoom?
Choice to start with “I met a traveller” immediately removes us from any contact with Ozy. Distant framing reflects how even the memory of his power is remote, reinforcing that authority can exist in name or monument, but be completely separated from human life.
