Q

What are the objectives of the Human Genome Project?

A
  1. To identify and locate the then estimated 50,000 - 100,000 human genes on all chromosomes. (The number of genes in humans turned out to be closer to 24,000).
  2. To determine the sequence of the three billion base pairs in the human genome.

Q

Why is identifying the disease genes in the human genome important?

A

Knowing where the gene is located, as well as the nature and action of the protein it codes for, will prompt development of new treatments for that disease.
