4. Circulatory system Y8 Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the primary function of the circulatory system?
Helps tissues get oxygen and nutrients, and removes waste products
What are the main components of the circulatory system?
- The heart
- Blood vessels: arteries, veins, capillaries
- Blood
What are the two types of circulatory systems in animals?
- Single circulatory system
- Double circulatory system
Describe the single circulatory system.
Blood is pumped from heart to gas exchange organ to the rest of the body
Describe the double circulatory system.
Blood is pumped from heart to lungs, back to the heart, to the rest of the body
What is the main function of the heart?
To pump deoxygenated blood to the lungs and oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
What structure divides the heart into two sides?
Septum
Which ventricle has thicker walls and why?
Left ventricle has thicker walls to pump oxygenated blood to the whole body
What is the purpose of the heart valves?
To ensure blood only circulates one way, preventing backflow
What are the three main types of blood vessels?
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
What do arteries do?
Carry blood from heart to organs, hold oxygenated blood, blood flows fast, under high pressure
What do veins do?
Carry blood from organs to heart, hold deoxygenated blood, blood flows slower, under low pressure, needs valves to prevent backflow
What do capillaries do?
Tiny vessels that carry oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, blood flows slow, walls are very thin
Fill in the blank: The walls of ventricles are ______ than walls of atria.
thicker
True or False: The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the entire body.
True
