4] Classical Conditioning (2) Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is behaviour therapy
Its based on theories of behaviourism and is action based, focusing on behaviour as the problem
What is the goal of behaviour therapy
To increase desirable behaviours and minimise unwanted behaviours
What is systematic desensitisation
Made by Dr Joseph Wolf.
It is a method used to treat anxiety and phobias, based on counterconditioning
What is counter conditioning
The process of establishing a response that competes with a previously acquired response
Systematic desensitisation stages: 1 anxiety hierarchy
The patient creates a list of situations where they feel fear/anxiety and ranks them
Systematic desensitisation stages: 2 relaxation traning
A muscle tensing and relaxing exercise, once a subject can relax they pair a word that they will use to condition it with
Systematic desensitisation stages: 3 Counterconditioning
Subject imagines the lowest level of the hierarchy while relaxing and continues on
Systematic desensitisation stages: 4 Assessment
They interact with feared object or scenario
What is flooding
Made by Thomas Stumpf in 1967
Its the rapid and intense exposure to a fear inducing stimuli in which the subject cannot preform their conditioned response.
Eventually getting used to it.
Flooding: What is habituation
Learning not to respond to an event that occur repeatedly
What is aversion therapy
It pairs unwanted behaviours with aversive stimuli and can be paired with aversive experiences, to reduce that behaviour
What are the types of aversion therapy
1] Overt sensitisation- external stimuli
2] Covert sensitisation- Internal imaginings
Advantages of Classical conditioning therapies
1] Short in duration
2] Cost effective
3] Applied to many disorders/situations
4] Strong follow up outcomes
5] Based in strong scientific theory
