4 Factors Effecting Response Time Flashcards

1

Q

What is choice reaction time

A

When the performer is required to choose from numerous stimuli.
There overall response time is much slower.

Q

What is hicks law

A

It states that as the number of choices increases, so does the reaction time. The graph has response time on Y axis and number of possible responses on X
If the line curves off on the graph, its because the environment has become familiar

Q

What is single chanel hypothesis

A

Only one stimuli can be processed at any one time
The second stimulus must wait until the first one has been processed before it can then be
A deal in processing second stimulus will increase the amount of response time and slow performance

Q

What is the physchological refactory period PRP

A

-builds on single Chanel hypothesis
Explains the delay that occurs as we can only process one stimuli at any one time
-eg fakes, dummies work
-if the second stimulus happens as we are completing the first stimulus, confusion and slower response time would be the result

Q

How could you write up an answer on the PRP

A

1) s1 is the introduction of first stimulus, eg ball carrier shapes up to pass the ball to his left.
2) r1 is the response to s1, eg: as the defender, you would step to the left preparing to try and intercept the ball during the pass
3) s2 is the introduction of the second stimulus, eg: rugby player does not pass the ball, but changes direction and runs through the gap.
4) R2 is the response to S2, there is a delay in s2 due to single Chanel hypothesis so even though s2 has been identified, the brain has to continue responding to s1.

Q

What is anticipation

A

When a sports performer tries to prejudge a stimulus
You can do this using body cues, language or position from the opponent
This info could be learned in the game learning from the actions of the opponent throughout

Q

What are the two types of anticipation

A

-temporal, prejudging WHEN the stimulus is going to happen
- spatial, WHERE and WHAT the projected stimuli are going to be
