Nazi policies towards women - family
- Law of Encouragement of Marriage: 1000 mark loan where the couple keep 250 every-time they have children.
- Mother’s Cross: for women with large amount of children - gold for 8+.
- Allow women to volunteer to have a baby for Aryan member of SS.
- 3 K’s: Kinder (children)
Nazi policies towards women - employment
- Law for the Reduction of Unemployment: given financial incentives to stay home.
- Not conscripting women until 1943
- Women in workplace rose by 2.4 million from 1933 to 1939 - cheap labour and economy growing.
- 3 K’s: Kuche (kitchen)
Nazi policies against women - appearance
- Emulate traditional german peasant fashion (e.g. bun or plaits, flat shoes, plain peasant costume)
- No makeup, high heels or smoking.
- Discouraged weight loss due to belief it may impair ability to give birth
Nazi policies towards children - youth organisations
- From 10 years boys join Hitler Youth and girls join League of German Maidens - compulsory from 1933; 90% boys 14+ boys members by 1939.
- Hitler Youth: prepare boys to be future soldiers; military style uniform; activities centred on physical activities, rifle practice and political indoctrination.
- LoGM: prepare girls for future womanhood; wear blue skirt, white blouse and heavy marching shoes; centred on developing domestic skills (e.g. sewing, cooking) with some physical activity.
Nazi policies towards children - education
- All teachers had to join Nazi Teachers’ Association - vetted for racial and political suitability.
- Curriculum reflect Nazi ideology: history on rise of Nazi Party; biology on eugenics; race study and ideology on Aryan race and anti-semitism, physical education 5 times a week; chemistry and maths undermined.
Nazi policies to reduce unemployment
- Public works schemes: from 18 billion marks to 37 billion by 1938 spent; 80,000 men employed for autobahns; 3000 km by 1938.
