Q

Outline the major distributions of water sources (2022)

A

Major stores of water include the hydrosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere and biosphere (1) The hydrosphere includes all liquid water, in and on the earth’s surface, including rivers, lakes and oceans. (1) Oceans account for 97% of all water on earth (1)
The lithosphere water includes all liquid water in the rocks and soil as groundwater and soil moisture (1), accounting for 1/3rd of all fresh water on earth

(can mention other spheres if time)

Q

Outline the purpose of a flood hydrograph (2023)

A

The purpose of a flood hydrograph is to track the progress of a storm in a drainage basin (1) Thus, it allows analysis of the impact the storm has on river levels by looking at measuring changes in discharge. (1) By looking at previous hydrographs it is possible to assess the likelihood of flood or dangerous events such as high flow rates (1) This allows for preventative action to be taken such as raising temporary barriers or declaring the river unsafe to users (1)

Q

outline the relationship between the water cycle and the carbon cycle in the atmosphere. (2021)

A

Increasing concentrations of carbon in the atmosphere has a warming effect on the planet and leads to increased evaporation (1) This can increase the rates of precipitation and carbon dioxide (1) This therefore impacts the water cycle as rising temperatures are melting permafrost- large stores of CO2 (1). The release of sulfur dioxide and nitrigon oxide in the atmosphere lead to the formation of acid rain and therefore ocean acidification.

Q

Outline the process of decomposition in the carbon cycle (2020)

A

decomposition refers to the breakdown /decay of organic matter by bacteria or fungi (1) Animals, such as worms, bacteria and fungi are examples of decomposers. (1) During decomposition, carbon is released (1) However, this is dependent on factors such as temperature as more microbial activity occurs, and thus higher rates of decomposition (1)
