4: Performing Quality Inspections Flashcards
(34 cards)
Describe a Standard:
A point of comparison, usually of what’s best or good, and detail common minimum conditions.
Describe a Procedure:
Set of instructions on how to perform an inspection and describe work scope and areas of inspection. May recommend specific equipment in certain situations.
What are Techniques?
Like procedures but more specific. Usually apply to specific products and equipment.
What are Specifications?
Provides minimum acceptance criteria and details which conditions are accepted and rejected.
What is a Code?
Similar to specifications, differ in nature of job they describe. When an inspection is required by a legal authority or regulator, it becomes a code.
What is the first step in any inspection regarding the documents?
Check for currency: date and revision number (if applicable)
What does the term “work scope” generally mean?
Generally refers to what we are going to inspect but sometimes can refer to how the inspection will proceed
What are the four parties involved in the construction and certification of a particular item?
Owners, construction contractors, inspectors and regulatory body that makes the rules about safety
The agreement between who and who is the most important consideration when identifying what needs to be inspected and how it should be carried out?
Your employer and the equipment owner
When dealing with organic contaminants such as dirt, dust and soils… what cleaning options work best?
Water
Water and solvent
Pressure washers or sprayers
When dealing with oil and grease contaminants, there are 4 methods that work best…
Liquid form solvents ex. Brake cleaner
Soap and water
Steam
Acids for pickling (or etching)
Metals containing nickel (such as: stainless steel, inconel, monel, hastelloy) can begin to crack after using what 2 types of cleaners?
Halogenated and chlorinated cleaners.
These cleaners can also affect titanium alloys
Aluminum alloys may become corroded after using what type of cleaners?
Phosphates and alkaline cleaners.
Especially at elevated temperatures
Acids used for cleaning can cause what type of cracking?
Hydrogen cracking
If a harsh blasting operation is used to remove contaminants from a material, what might you need to do prior inspection?
Use and acid etch or pickling operation to remove the fine layer of smeared material from surface.
Which industry standard will you find a clear answer on which chemical or abrasive cleaners are appropriate and how to use them?
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
What are the 3 critical steps to correctly prepare for an inspection?
- Identify and understand the work scope
- Identify resources that can be used during the inspection
- Prepare the surface
What is ambient light?
Light around the inspection that is not added for the purpose of inspection.
ALWAYS use supplemental light even if ambient light levels meet requirements
What is the main purpose of supplemental lighting?
Make sure minimum lighting requirements are met.
Why have light emitting diodes (LEDs) become popular in flashlights?
Because of their durability and efficiency
How are some of the wavelengths “shifted” from a pale blue to more yellow in colour on the LED?
A phosphorus coating on the LED
The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code states what about angle of viewing?
- Eye must be closer than 25 inches (not so close that the eye can’t focus)
- Not less than 30 degrees measured from the inspection surface
Polarizing filters can be used to control what?
Scatter and glare
What is the focal length?
The point at which the image is optimally focused
